Fox
Foxes are found throughout the world with the Fennec Fox from North Africa and the Sinai Peninsula becoming a very popular “wild animal” pet. The Fennec Fox is a small (2.5 to 4 lb.) wild canine that can live 10 to 12 years. They require a large (75 sq ft) enclosure that must have an enclosed bottom (they are excellent diggers) and an enclosed top (they are also excellent climbers). The wire used in construction should be no larger than ½”x3”. The fox should have a good dry den and a high spot to sun on.
FEEDING
Fennec Foxes should be fed a good commercial diet (such as Brisky Pet Products Fox Diet). Avoid the traditional habit of feeding them a domestic cat or dog food as these usually do not contain the proper nutrients and can often lead to obesity. Foxes can also be supplemented with cooked vegetables, fruit (no citrus however), and cooked lean meats. Limit any treats to less than 10% of their diet.
HEALTH
All Fennec Foxes should see a veterinarian. They require the same vaccinations as a domestic canine. Be sure that the Parvo and Distemper are KILLED vaccines. Fennec Foxes can be treated with the same flea dips and worming medications as domestic dogs (always consult your veterinarian and follow label directions as to administration and weight limitations). Fennec Foxes should also be on a heartworm medication.
OTHER CONCERNS
Fennec Foxes can get along with other pets, but should always be supervised. Fennec Foxes have an overabundance of energy and unless they receive enough exercise they are prone to obesity. They are very social animals and need a lot of human companionship to keep them tame. They can be trained to walk on a leash and some have even been litter trained.
